Groom street was a renovation that bought the life back into this classic Queenslander, here in Toowoomba.
The Groom Street renovation project showcases how to preserve the unique character of a historic home while introducing contemporary comforts and aesthetics.
Preserving Character with VJ Walls
One of the quintessential features of a Queenslander home is the VJ (Vertical Joint) walls. These walls are not only structurally significant but also contribute to the charm and warmth of the interior. In the Groom Street project, we made sure to retain the VJ walls throughout the house. Their classic look and texture are a nod to the home’s storied past, providing a continuous thread that ties the old with the new.
A Hidden Gem: The Beautiful Brick Fireplace
During the renovation, we made an unexpected but delightful discovery. Hidden behind layers of plaster and paint was a stunning brick fireplace. This fireplace, now a centerpiece in the living area, adds a rustic charm that perfectly complements the VJ walls. Its exposed brickwork brings a sense of history and authenticity to the space, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere.
Pressed Metal Ceiling in the Living Room
Another highlight of the Groom Street renovation is the pressed metal ceiling in the living room. This intricate ceiling design not only adds a touch of elegance and sophistication but also pays homage to the architectural trends of the era when the house was originally built. The shimmering patterns of the pressed metal catch the light beautifully, creating a focal point that draws the eye upward and enhances the room’s grandeur.
Modern Kitchen and Bathrooms
While preserving the home’s historical elements was a priority, we also aimed to introduce modern conveniences and style. The kitchen and bathrooms received the most significant updates.
The Kitchen
The updated kitchen now boasts state-of-the-art appliances, sleek cabinetry, and an open-plan design that promotes functionality and ease of movement. The modern aesthetic is balanced with traditional elements, create a harmonious blend of old and new.
